Dr YSR Horticultural University

Established on 26th June, 2007, Dr Y SR Horticultural University is the second horticultural university of India. It is located at Venkataramannagudem, near Tadepalligudem in West Godavari District of Andhra Pradesh.

Andhra Pradesh is the leader in the production of mango, oil palm, chillies, turmeric, sweet orange, papaya and second largest producer of total fruits and spices.  Therefore there is a need for trained manpower which can come through proper training and education in an University. This gave rise to the establishment of Dr Y SR Horticultural University.

The UG and PG educational programmes which were being offered at Rajendranagar, Hyderabad under Acharya NG Ranga Agricultural University were also brought into the fold of Andhra Pradesh Horticultural University from 2007-08 academic year onwards.

The University which runs on the Land Grant pattern followed in the USA has the following mandate: 
  • Human Resource Development through education
  • Conduct need based research
  • Dissemination of the proven technologies developed through research

Research in Dr Y SR Horticultural University

Dr Y SR Horticultural University has several research programmes running at all Research Stations which have been based on eight thrust areas based on the present day need. All India Coordinated Research projects are also operating at different research stations of the university. Funds for research are provided by the State Government and also by the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR)

Academic Programs of Dr YSR Horticultural University

The courses have been devised keeping in mind the horticultural need of the state of Andhra keeping it within the limits of the ICAR recommendations.

B.Sc. (Hons.) Horticulture

Candidates who possess the following qualifications are eligible to seek admission. 
A pass in two year Intermediate Examination conducted by the Board of Intermediate Education, Andhra Pradesh or any other examination recognized as equivalent thereto by the University or Board of Intermediate Education with the following subjects namely: 
                            
i)     Physical Sciences                                                                  
ii)   Biological or Natural Sciences                            

Criteria for selection
The seats under ICAR quota are filled by ICAR, based on the performance in the written examination and the choice of the students. 

PG Programme in M.Sc. (Horticulture)

This is a two year programme with specialization in (i) Fruit Science (ii) Vegetable Science (iii) Floriculture & Landscape Architecture (iv) Plantation, Spices, Medicinal & Aromatic Crops, (v) Post Harvest Technology (vi) Plant Pathology and (vii) Entomology.

Ph.D (Horticulture)

This is a three year programme with specialization in (i) Fruit Science (ii) Vegetable Science (iii) Floriculture & Landscape Architecture (iv) Plantation, Spices, Medicinal & Aromatic Crops which are offered at the College of Horticulture, Venkataramannagudem, West Godavari District and College of Horticulture, Anantharajupeta (Kadapa District).

Diploma in Horticulture

This is a two years Diploma in Horticulture. A pass in X class with overall grade 5.0 (including Hindi) for General and overall grade 4.0 (excluding Hindi) for S.C. & S.T. should be studied in rural areas (Non Municipal Area) at least for a period of Four years in Andhra Pradesh State only.
