Dravidian University

Several noted academicians felt the need to  preserve Dravidian family of languages which actually gave rise to the Dravidian University in 1987. The Government of Andhra Pradesh established the Dravidian University at the tri- lingual junction, Kuppamin Chittoor District, A. P., 8 k.m away from Tamil Nadu, 4 km, away from Karnataka. Dravidian family of languages which are more than 27 of  them is one of the most ancient living languages of the world and  is known to have contributed largely in ancient Indian culture.

Objectives of Dravidian University

  • To work for an integrated development of Dravidian languages, both written and spoken, including the Tribal languages of the Dravidian family.
  • To impart instruction and training at very high levels in Dravidian languages, literature and culture related art and crafts and allied subjects with an indigenous thrust.
  • To advance and disseminate learning and knowledge by diverse of means, including the use of new and advanced communication technologies.
  • To cooperate with, and seek the cooperation of other Universities and institutions of higher learning, professional bodies and organizations for such purposes as the university considers necessary.
  • To take up extension activities with special emphasis on rural development so as to make the benefits of the work done by the University reach educational institutions throughout the country.
  • To impart training to those residing within and beyond India who desire to study Dravidian languages, literature, culture and modern sciences, medicine, engineering, technology and allied subjects.
  • To translate books of other languages into Dravidian languages according to the needs in consonance with the objectives of the University and also to translate books from the Dravidian languages into other languages.
  • To develop Dravidian languages as vehicles of modern knowledge and media of instruction.

MPhil and PhD Program
M.Phil. Programme (Full-time/Part-time) in Regular mode shall be carried in concerned Departments of Dravidian University.

Admission to Research programmes 

Admission to M.Phil. and Ph.D.) shall be through an Entrance Test (DURCET) conducted by Dravidian University subject to satisfying all other requirements as prescribed for registration. At the time of
admission the candidates have to attend the interview before the Admission committee.

The following categories of candidates are exempted from taking the Research Entrance Test for admission into Ph.D. programme. However, they have to apply in the prescribed application form for consideration for direct Admission into Ph.D. Programme.
  • Candidates qualified in GATE/UGC-JRF/UGC-CSIR-JRF/UGCNET/APSET/ any SET of any Southern States 
  • M.Phil Regular (Full-Time/Part-Time) Scholars of Dravidian University who have submitted their dissertation. 
The University takes out its own journal Dravidian Studies (A Quarterly Research Journal) to reach out to a greater number of people.

University Library

The Dravidian University Central Library is also known as Bishop Caldwell Dravidian e-Resources Centre was started in the year 1997 with a small collection of books. The library has a large collection of 76 thousand volumes, in various subjects, are very useful to all users in general and for the researchers of the Dravidian languages in particular. In addition to book collection, the library concentrates on subscribing for the journals and learned periodicals which are very useful for the Dravidian research works.
